The Food of the Gods (1976)
88 min.
Directed by Bert I. Gordon.
With Ida Lupino, Pamela Franklin, Marjoe Gortner, Ralph Meeker, Jon Cypher, John McLian, Belinda Balaski.
Enjoyable 'nature runs amok' entry.

On a hunting vacation, football hero Gortner and his friends discover various wildlife have grown to gigantic proportions...bees, chickens, rats...they're all HUGE. And the buggers are damn mad!

Turns out a strange bubbling crude spurts eternal in the back of Lupino's farmyard, causing animals who feast upon this 'food of the gods' to reach enormous size.

Along with her entrepreneurial boss Meeker, bacteria specialist (and lovable scream queen) Franklin join the crew, but soon the whole group finds mother nature won't let them leave without a price...revenge by death.

This is good natured matinee fare with a surprising amount of blood (check out those rat attacks); it picks up steam (& atmosphere) during the final third.

Best scene: the mass drowning climax, a well done bit.

From Bert Gordon, the director of Empire of the Ants (1977).
